Abstract

In China, poems on the threshold of death of female suicides combine the writing act which is typically masculine with self immolation, thus raising these suicides to the heroic level of masculine suicide. They strikingly contrast with the western feminine suicide type of self effacement illustrated by Virginia Woolf.
