Abstract

This review focuses on specific aspects of parasuicidal behavior in children and adolescents. Significant risk factors are psychiatric disorders in the child or adolescent as well as a low level of functioning in the family. However, there are also a considerable number of other individual and psychosocial variables that are statistically associated with parasuicide. A small subgroup of children and adolescents repeatedly show parasuicidal behavior. Implications of the scientific evidence presented for diagnosis and therapy are discussed. © Hogrefe-Verlag, Göttingen 2004.
