Abstract

The Grief Experience Inventory (GEI) was used to assess bereavement reactions in 47 Colombian widows of police officers: 20 of them live in Bogotá, 14 in Medellín and 13 in Quibdo. Intensities of bereavement reactions were compared among the widows that live in each city and were found significant differences in the Scales of Anger (AH), Somatization (Som), Sleep Disturbance (SD), Loss of Vigor (SVI), and Loss of Appetite (SAP). There were no differences in bereavement intensities between those widows who lost their couple by homicide, accident, sudden natural death or suicide. The sample confirm with more frequency unusual answers and they don't try to respond in a way that is socially accepted. In summary, the symptoms of grief, evaluated by GEI, are experienced with great intensity indicating the presence of acute bereavement that can get complicated in any moment.
