Abstract

Age-appropriate communication skills are a key element for effective treatment of adolescent patients. Adolescents expect the opportunity to talk with the physician alone for some time and assurance of confidentiality on request even with regard to their parents, provided that the adolescent patient is not at risk for serious selfharm or homicide. Assessment of psychosocial history with the adolescent patient alone enables the physician to assess the young person's psychosocial development, to identify risk-taking behaviour and to understand the patient's burden of illness which is the basis for negotiating age-appropriate therapeutic goals and strategies. Negotiation of treatment may be seen as an important tool to improve the adolescent patient's self-motivation which is essential for effective treatment.
