Abstract

Organophosphorus compound intoxication is common in our country. Some patients subsequently have organophosphate-induced delayed neuropathy. This neuropathy results in damage of both peripheral and central nervous systems. In this case report, a 56 year-old woman attempted suicide by taking approximately 950 mg kg-1 dimethyl-2,2-dichloro vinyl phosphate (DDVP)(dichlorvos) orally. After a muscarinic and cholinergic syndrome lasting three days, she developed a purely motor distal axonal polyneuropathy on the 16th day. Polyneuropathy symptoms revealed full recovery on the upper extremities and small recovery on the lower extremities at the end of the 4th month. In conclusion, organophosphate induced delayed polyneuropathy is an important cause of morbidity and is not a well known clinical presentation as acute toxicity.
