Abstract

Depressive illnesses in children or adolescents have repercussions in the social, school and family arenas and are accompanied by an increased risk of suicide. These factors argue in favour of effective, focused treatment in the paediatric population. Tricyclic antidepressants, which are known for their beneficial effect on adults, have never demonstrated more than a placebo effect on children and teenagers. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors demonstrate a significant therapeutic benefit in the majority of studies when set against placebos. They are better tolerated that tricyclic drugs and less toxic in the event of overdose. We give a rundown of the pharmacokinetic data, the results of clinical tests and the prescription modes of the different antidepressants used in problems of paediatric depression.
