Abstract

BACKGROUND: Old age constitutes a critical stage of life characterized by an increasing vulnerability induced by frequently precarious physical and mental health. Is this data still accurate when for the last ten years our country has been subjected to important socio-economic changes.

METHODS: To describe a panorama of the traditional third age, te review the disadvantages and advantages of third age from decrease in financial resources to the shortage of suicidal behavior, from increase in free time te socio-affective isolation.

RESULTS: Tunisian society has more and more a tendency to a certain wersternisation. However, the older person still retains privileged, status, is surrounded by respect and even veneration. Tradition and religion combine to achieve this result.

CONCLUSION: If medicine allows longevity to increase, the privileged status of older persons in our society needs to be preserved, in particular, by involving them in activities where they can put to use their knowledge and experience. It is also important to continue te give them a conciliatory role, particularly useful in families taking care of older people in difficult situation.
