Abstract

One hundred consecutive cases of attempted suicide by poisoning were taken from the medical indoor of Lok Nayak Hospital. The mean age was 26.7 years (S. D. = 11.4) with more than half (54%) of them between 16-25 years of age. Slight male preponderance was observed. 55% of cases had a psychiatric diagnosis of which depression and adjustment disorder were most common. Organophosphorous compounds and drugs (mainly benzodiazepines) were most commonly employed as means for attempting suicide.
