Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This work suggests studying the prevalence of major depressive syndromes to 515 old subjects institutionalized in care in succession rehabilitation and long-term care in a geriatric's hospital of the Paris region.

METHODS: On a given day, systematic study of the records of 515 elderly patients.

RESULTS: The found prevalence is 42, 72% in global population. Sex ratio is the same (43%). The visits of the families and the volunteers (60%) have no considerable incidence. As regards the co-morbidity, three big pathologies are correlated to major depressions, it is, about cancers (56,10%), about neurological pathologies (50%) and about insanities (47,37%). 93,73% of the patients received the visit of the psychiatrist and/or the psychologist and 65% of the depressed patients receive an antidepressant treatment. 12,27% in the 15 days which follow the entrance (entry). 32,27% at the end of 3 months. The rate of attempt of suicide is 0,97%.

CONCLUSION: This study allowed us to take into account diagnosis "major depression" in the same way as the other one to answer it in an adapted way (psychotherapy + chemotherapy) and try to avoid any geriatric "hospitalisme".
