Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa is the eating disorder of the mental origin, affecting predominantly teen-age girls and young women. Cardiac complications are secondary in apperance, after suicide attempts, as a reason for sudden deaths in anorectic patients. The aim of the study was the analisys of the left ventricular diastolic function in patients with severe anorexia nervosa and after normal weight re-gain. Material and methods: 50 patients aged from 12 to 18 years, with average 27.9% lack of weight were enrolled into the study. All patients met the criteria of DSM III-R for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Left ventricular diastolic function was assessed by doppler echocardiography, using transmitral flow curve and IVRT analisys. Patients were studied twice: examination I included 50 anorectic patients with advanced stage of illness and examination la included the same patients after treatment.

RESULTS achieved in both groups were compared with control groups KI and KIa matched in age and heart rate.

RESULTS: In patients evaluated before treatment decreased maximum A wave velocity, increased E to A wave ratio and extension of the E wave decelleration time were observed. After normal weight re-gain all mentioned parameters normalized.

CONCLUSION: 1. In patients with severe anorexia nervosa both left ventricular compliance and relaxation are impaired. 2. After appropriate weight gain left ventricular diastolic function becomes normal normalised.
