Abstract

Most suicides are committed in the context of depression but depressive syndromes are often overlooked and not sufficiently treated in primary care. The "Nuremberg Alliance Against Depression" - part of the German Research Network on Depression, Suicidality - aims at improving the care for patients suffering from depression trying to reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts. Elderly patients run an increased risk of dyingfrom suicidal acts. Strategies in suicide prevention therefore have to focus on this high risk group.
