Abstract

Adolescence has been traditionally pushed into the background in the research as in health care for its low morbidity & mortality scores. However, it has some particular characteristics that make it worthy of a greater degree of dedication: high prevalence of non-consulted pathology, substance use and abuse, potentially grave psychiatric disorders, school failure related to health problems, accidents as the first morbidity & mortality cause at this age and the increase in aggressiveness in several societies. Among psychiatric disorders, depressive symptomatology deserves a special consideration, so prevalent at this age although not borne in mind in Pediatrics till a recent date. Depression uses to join other psychiatric disorders, among which suicide is feared most. In Spain, suicide has duplicated lately since the age of 15, while in the U.S.A. this increase starts from the 10 to 14 years old group. The principal risk behaviors are: substance use, sexual conducts, accidents (road accidents or others), and aggressive conducts. They must result from the interaction between the environment and endogen factors.
