Abstract

Introduction. Since its introduction in clinical practice, the term borderline has been variously revisited. Initially used to describe unsure patients, with a neurotic behaviour and tendencies to pass through setting boundaries, it has then been better described as a personality disorder, well characterised according to four main clinical dimensions: affective, impulsive, self-identity and psychotic. Because of the continuing evolution of borderline personality disorder diagnosis, of its principal clinical features and of the high incidence of comorbidity with DSM IV Axis I disorders, it is very tough to draw a well defined and complete picture of the disorder. Aim. Aim of this study is to describe a sample of borderline inpatients during a period of voluntary hospitalisation in the III Psychiatric Clinic of University of Rome "La Sapienza", considering sociodemographical, clinical and neurobiological features, comorbidity with Axis I disorders and response to pharmacologic treatment.
