Abstract

Mrs. M was referred for psychoanalysis after a failed suicide attempt, which was preceded, a few months before, by an episode of psychogenic amnesia. In the course of her analysis, the dynamics behind the "dissociative episode" proved to be a function of defensive repression and negation, which influenced the nature and course of her analysis. The material brought to focus a complicated overlap between her father's family romance and her own, revealing an unresolved Oedipus complex. Termination was handled from the point of view of what to terminate in analysis, and not of when to terminate it.
