Abstract

Suicide is now the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. The rates of suicide among the 15-24 year olds in United States have increased from 2.7 per 100,000 in 1950 to 13.2 in 1990. In Israel the rates in this age group were 2.9 in 1955 with in increase to 5.0 in 1995. Suicidal behavior has been studied in United States, where 4% of high school students had attempted suicide within the last 12 months and 8% had attempted within their lifetime. A study from Israel found that 20.6% of the girls and 13.5% of the boys had thought about attempting suicide, a suicide attempt had actually been planned by 8-10%, 6-7% had attempted and 3-4% had made an attempt that required medical attention. It is therefore concluded that suicide is a serious problem in adolescence, which every health professional working with adolescents should be aware of.
