Abstract

An increasing interest in the problems connected with the suicidal behaviour of adolescents has been noted world wide. The clinical experiences as well as numerous researches have lately shown a constant growth of this kind of behaviour in this population. In the USA the suicide is currently the third leading cause of death among young persons between 15 and 19 years, similar results are being stated also in the Western European studies. In Slovenia, which is geographically as well as socio culturally placed into the Middle European region, the suicide coefficient in the total population proves to be extremely high (more than 30/100.000 inhabitants). The statistic is ranking it 6th in Europe. Also among adolescents, especially in the age group from 15-19 years, the suicide rate as well as other forms of suicidal behaviour have been increasing in our country. Consequently these problems require and are being given great attention not only from the point of view of medical and psychological science but also as a phenomenon with broader social implications.
