Abstract

The role of the counseling service in the aftermath of an on-campus suicide is examined in terms of intervention external to the service as well as internal considerations. External interventions included attendance at meetings, all-campus e-mailing, informational article in the school newspaper, consultation with residence assistants and with faculty, and letters to parents of enrolled students. Internal concerns focused on containing anxiety related to working with at-risk students and with reconciling considerations about the limitations of psychotherapy. Factors contributing to the resilience of the campus community as well as the counseling center staff are noted. © 2000 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
