Abstract

PURPOSE: In this study, it was aimed to analyse 65 sexual assault victims referred to the Forensic Medicine, Department of Cumhuriyet University Medical School between 1995-1999.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cases were evaluted with respect to the victims' age, sex, referral reason, examination findings including mental or physical condition as well as force or rape signs. Hymenal and/or anal examination reports between 1 January 1995 - 31 December 1999 were evaluated retrospectively.

RESULTS: Of the cases, 48 were in the second decade and among them, 39 were females. Thirty seven cases were referred from rural areas for examination. In 16 cases with force symptoms, the physical findings of rape were also present. The mental or physical disorders were detected in 12 cases and the physical findings of rape in 35. Approximately two months after the rape, one victim attempted suicide.

CONCLUSION: The problems likely to be faced with in such circumstances are discussed with an emphasis on the suitable approach in sexual assault cases.
