Abstract

RESULTS of research in social epidemiology and medical sociology on social factors influencing the reasons for the use of emergency departments are presented. The report is focussed on injuries, accidents, acute diseases and psychosocial problems.

RESULTS show that the number of injuries and accidents as well as suicide and homicide is higher in socially deprived groups and areas. Additionally, there is a clear social gradient in acute diseases like acute myocardial infarction and in the occurrence of psychosocial problems. Possible implications for emergency medical care are discussed.
