Abstract

The author processed 271 attitudes of medical students, expressed anonymously in writing. In seminars on medical ethics with fifth year students of the Medical Faculty Palacky University Olomouc in 1997-1999 the problem of euthanasia was discussed in detail. In addition to active euthanasia where the patient suffers from unbearable pain and repeatedly asks for death, where the executor of active euthanasia is the doctor. The students discussed also the problem of passive euthanasia such as refusal or discontinuation of treatment which should be interpreted as the patient's right to die. It was repeatedly emphasized that it must not imply discontinued care of the patient. With the medical students also problems of not requested euthanasia and involuntary euthanasia were discussed. The authors deal also with DNR procedures (do not resuscitate) which are the patient's wish. The authors did not omit the problem of assisted suicide. Finally the medical students were asked to express voluntarily in writing their views on euthanasia.
