Abstract

This analysis of the novel is geared to two clinical concepts, that of "hybrid psychosis" ["mischbildhafte Psychose"] as examined by Mentzos and others, and that of "vertical splitting" first introduced by Kohut and later used by Gedo. In the first part the author studies the way these concepts manifest themselves in the novel in the form of a splitting-up of the characters and the constellations between them. In the second part he traces the process of a progressive psychic disturbance in which the persecutory superego gains the upper hand, culminating in the suicide of the central figure.
