Abstract

Notes left by people committing suicide are an important source of information regarding the psychological state of the subject in the moment in which he decides to en his life voluntarily. 52 documents found in 31 suicides committed in the province of Alicante (Spain) are analyzed. The following variables are studied: number of notes, material or instrument used to write them, characteristics of content, addressee, language, and their legibility. Very often, one single document which has been written with a ballpoint pen on a page from a notebook, a sheet of paper or writing paper is found. It is written to a relation, is legible and is written in Spanish and its contents are a farewell, instructions, accusations or a request for forgiveness is found.
