Abstract

This article reviews the literature on commonest psychological phenomenon and psychiatric illnesses in different stages of the disease, during and after the treatment in women with breast carcinoma. Distress, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and psychological consequences of pain are the specific challenges, which can make life more difficult. Modalities of different type of intervention often used in contemporary psychooncology and psychosocial support are introduced and discussed. The interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approach is discussed as well as the different organization and modalities of acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient aftercare, applied in different countries are also reported. The support of the health care team, specially the mental health professionals, after the problems are recognized can improve the functional and social quality of their lives, emotional well-being, and also improve psychosocial adjustment, relation with partner, friends and family, and some authors even report significant survival effect along with a normalization and a boost of the immunological measurements.
