Abstract

This case history of a 28-year-old man typifies the course of social anxiety disorder/social phobia prior to effective treatment. The patient first had symptoms as a teenager. He avoided social contact, but considered this was just shyness. At the age of 22 years, however, he developed comorbid depression leading to attempted suicide. Only then did he seek help. Initial treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy alone or in combination with moclobemide was unsuccessful. More recently, paroxetine has produced a sustained clinical improvement in the symptoms of this patient, and he now experiences enhanced quality of life and improved social contact.
