Abstract

Emergency medicine in psychiatry and the management and treatment outside the psychiatric hospitals is only a rare topic of research in German literature up to now. Data collected by the medical emergency team (4.500 emergency reports over a period of five years) in Lindau, a town in a holiday area in South Germany (30.000 inhabitants, more than 100.000 tourists) were evaluated. The psychiatric emergency cases were third among all cases of emergency situations after internal or surgical patients. Anxious syndromes, excitement states, drug problems and suicidal attempts represented the most frequent psychiatric emergency cases. The evaluation of data was done according to diagnoses, personal data like age, race and medical treatment.

RESULTS lead to the conclusion that psychiatric aspects should become a regular part of medical education programs of emergency teams. They also show the necessity of regional ambulant or stationary offers for patients in psychical crisis.
