Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at the urban health area served by the "Reina" and "Van Troi" Teaching Polyclinics, in Centro Habana municipality. Havana City province, aimed at identifying psychosocial and sociodemographic characteristics that are important for those for those elderly who attempted suicide between 1993 and 1997. The sample induded 20 aged persons that were classilied for that reason and who were permanent residents in that area and had no intellectual deficit. The semistructured interview on suicide attempt was used. According to the results, these people attempted suicide due basically to family conflicts, physical disabling diseases and loneliness. Most of them before the suicide attempt had good quality formal and informal social support. The feeling of dispair, the depressive syndrome and the personal history of suicide were the mein risk factors that preceded the event.
