Abstract

Products of joint coal-thermal reduction of titanium and silicon oxides in a vacuum were studied magnetochemically. Examination of the experimental data for carbide-silicide compositions with the mole fraction of the Ti3SiC2 phase varying within 0.16-0.34 revealed a paramagnetic component in the magnetic susceptibility. The dependences of the effective magnetic moment and of the paramagnetic susceptibility on the phase composition and temperature suggest the 2T2g state of titanium atoms located in a distorted octahedral field in titanium silicide carbide. The antiferromagnetic type of exchange interactions between paramagnetic titanium atoms in a layered crystal lattice of Ti3SiC2 was found from the temperature dependences of the magnetic characteristics of the materials.
