Abstract

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine are looking at methods of using large proteins to attack HIV. Proteins designed to activate a system of controlled cell death, called apoptosis, have been effective in test tubes, killing HIV-infected cells within 10 minutes. Researchers believe the same method may be effective in eliminating other pathogens that use specific protease actions, including hepatitis C and cytomegalovirus.
