Abstract

The publication of J. W. Goethe's >>The sorrows of young Werther<< was followed by a series of suicides of young people which seemed to be related to the novel - better known as >>Wefther-effect<<. The author suffered from feelings of guilt and revised the book, creating more distance to the tender hero in the story and thereby taking the edge off.
