Abstract

Self-injurious behaviour by means of self-cutting was reported by 21 of 150 patients (14%) with chronic alcoholism, most often as a transient disorder during adolescence or as young adult, and in some cases preceding the onset of alcoholism. Clinical features of these patients included frequent drug experimentation, suicide attempts, aggressive and delinquent behaviour, and severe personality disorders. Therapeutical implications are discussed.
