Abstract

Alcohol is often present when the circumstances of suicide or attempted suicide are analyzed. But this presence can be assessed in various ways, as alcohol can: - precede enactment of suicide and facilitate it by cancelling certain inhibitions, - be ingested in order to emphasize the effects of other toxics, - and, less frequently, be the only ingested product, but in large quantities. In addition, the clinical aspects and the patient's management will be different depending on whether alcohol consumption is acute or chronic. The presence or not of an associated mental pathology will also modify the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Mostly, depression with agitation may be one of the triggering causes of the suicidal act. Additional factors are prolonged social isolation, personal losses, or separations. Frequently, a combination of these factors with pathological personalities is found.
