Abstract

Postvention refers to those things done to address and alleviate possible aftereffects of trauma. It serves to mollify the pain inflicted by an unusual event, whether suicide, homicide, terrorist attack, and so on. The authors define such concepts as posttraumatic stress, suicide, and postvention and then, from the classical and current literature as well as almost 20 years of experience in schools and communities, explicate some basic guiding principles. These principles are presented as heuristic; there is no 'cookbook' to address the complexity of traumatic, including suicidal, effects. It is concluded that there have been past errors in the field and that strong effort, by clinicians and researchers together, is for evaluation and research.
