Abstract

Panic disorder is a potentially life-threatening anxiety disorder that requires early screening and detection to treat properly. Patients with panic disorder often also have major depressive disorders and are at increased risk for suicide. They may present to your office with a variety of physical complaints, including palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, and paresthesias. A thorough initial interview may reveal risk factors for panic disorder and/or depression in a patient's family history or personal functioning. Be particularly alert for signs of panic disorder and/or depression among patient subgroups with high suicide rates, including elderly patients, teenagers, and physicians.
