Abstract

BACKGROUND: Suicide attempt is one of the ten main causes to enter the emergency room. We have found that in our hospital, suicide attempt is one of the main causes of morbidity among young patients, and affects principally women between 15 and 24 years old.

OBJECTIVE: To find socioeconomic characteristics of patients who enter the emergency room with suicide attempt and the relation with sex and age. Material and methods: From March 1st to September 15th, a total of 101 patients were included in this study, patients had suicide attempt, men and women were older than 15 years. The Mad Master test, which was answered individually, researched the socioeconomic profile of the patients who attempted to commit suicide. When all the figures were gathered, they were analyzed.

RESULTS: We studied a total of 101 patients, 71 women and 30 men, over 15 years old, the average age was 39.5 years. In 76 cases, the suicide attempt was the first event, in 22 cases it was the second or third event and 3 completed the attempt. The swallowing drugs was the main method used by patients. The patients who were single or married prevailed over widowers, divorced and in free union. Most of the patients were undergraduate students. The majority of patients came from a nuclear family, but this had strict authority and obscure communication. There was no economic deficit because all the families earned between 3 or 4 times the minimum wage and the deficit was of 20-30%. The main factor to cause suicide attempt was emotional factor.

CONCLUSIONS: Since 5 years ago, the rate of suicide attempt has increased, we found that in our population the majority were women in the third decade of life, undergraduate students, unmarried people, from nuclear family, but they had strict authority and obscure communication; this condition originated conflict and broke up the family, and they swallowed some medicine to commit suicide.
