Abstract

The author presents an account on views of T. G. Masaryk in his thesis of 1879 'Suicide, a social mass phenomenon of modern enlightenment' with the subtitle 'Monograph with comments on sociology and statistics' which was one of the first publications on suicide in Europe. It was published first in German in Viena in 1871. Masaryk assembled ample literary, statistical material and original ideas; he investigated suicide from different aspects: countries, social and professional factors, sex, status, religion lifestyle changes etc. and thus the foundations for establishment of social pathology, pathology and sociology of suicide which he considers as its fundamental opponent the product of modern society, its poor education, lack of religious feelings and other factors of civilization. For Masaryk prevention of suicide is most important. He pays considerable attention to psychological and psychiatric problems and conditioning of suicidal behaviour.
