Abstract

A descriptive study where the municipalitis of the Camaguey Province were classified according to the living conditions in three strata, using for this, a synthetic indicator, based on human progress index, having a recorded information about different sources of the Province, was carried out. For the analysis of mortality, rates were calculated every three years, taking into account; causes, sex ans age groups; rates of potentially lost living years and rates classified by the direct method. In the studied triennial period, the infant mortality rates were higher in places with the best and worse living conditions; in the components' behaviour, a prevalence of the neonatal component in the Stratum with better living conditions was observed A); where the higher rates of low birth weight were also reported, while in places with the worse living conditions (C), the postneonatal component had a relatively greater importance. Although in the stratum with better living conditions, the greater risks for mortality due to endogenous causes were observed, in places with worse living conditions, the premature mortality, predominanted. In the group C, higher rates due to violent deaths, and a significant number of lost premature lives, mainly due to suicides, were noted.
