Abstract

The concept of a despairing adolescent in one's surgery may strike despair equally into the heart of the doctor. Yet the family practitioner can do much to help. Young people who present in despair offer the family doctor an opportunity to diagnose early psychiatric illness, to assess for risk of suicide and to institute early treatment and preventive measures which will minimise long term psychiatric morbidity. As such, despairing adolescents should be seen as a challenge.
