Abstract

Ninety-three percent of the individuals referred to the Suicidological Unit of Padua University Hospital, following an attempted suicide (parasuicide), presented a psychiatric disorder which met DSM-III-R (axis I or II) criteria. Mood disorders accounted for 42% of all emerging pathologies. This percentage rose to 54% where depressive syndromes were considered. Subjects were assessed as part of a collaborating study conducted by the European office of the WHO and the data are based on observations made during study.

FINDINGS emphasize the importance of the suicidological evaluation of patients suffering from mood disorders and the need for adequate, early treatment, especially in the elderly population, in whom there appears to be a closer association between suicidal behaviour and depressive pathology.
