Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to probe the prevention of suicide in patients with affective disorders.

METHODS: 117 patients diagnosed as affective disorders were followed up at the eighth year after their discharge, applying the case-control study nested in a cohort.

RESULTS: During 8 years after discharge, 16% of all patients had suicide and 27% of all suicides occurred within 1 year after their release from hospitalization or readmission. The risk factors for suicide included female, bipolar mixed/rapid cycling subtype, more frequent episodes and history of suicide attempts. The suicide positively correlated with either annual frequency of episodes or times of suicide attempts during index episodes. The hospitalization was a protective factor for suicide and negatively correlated with suicide. There was a negative interaction on suicide between more hospitalizations and either bipolar mixed/rapid cycling subtype or frequent episodes.

CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the preventive strategy to suicide in affective disorders, such as hospitalization, may be provided to the patients in early period after discharge or those with some risk factors for suicide.
