Abstract

During the last decades a considerable increase of suicide attempts among persons under 20 h as been observed. Therefore, it was conducted a descriptive and analytical study of suicide behavior that comprised all the individuals of this age living in the urban area served by the West Bayamo Polyclinic, municipality of Bayamo, Granma province. A great number of men aged 17-19 prevailed, and the most used method was the ingestion of psychotropic drugs and other tablets, accounting for 51 %. Most of the third part of the adolescents had attempted suicide before, whereas 66,2 % had a family background of suicide behavior. Family conflicts followen by bad socioeconomic conditions predominated among the risk factors for the studied group. 98 % of the cases were under observation and 92.4 % (49 cases) were followed up.
