Abstract

A retrospective case-control study on suicidal behaviour in Sancti Spiritus municipality from October 1995 to november 1996 was performd. The cases were taken compulsory declared disease cards and each case was assigned a control number by matching age, sex and place of residence. The results were the following: suicidal behaviour prevailed in groups aged 25-34; attempted suicide was more frequent in females and committed suicide in males, and the administration of psychopharmaceuticals was the most used method. In the statistical analysis, a causative relationship with individual risk factors was found: a causative relationship with individual risk factors was found: depressed, alcoholic, family-un supported patients. Among the family risk factors, there were family histories of suicidal behavior, families facing social problems, changes in family dynamics, altered family relationships and low per capita income. It is reported that other analyzed variables also showed a causative relationship such as having junior high school or lower educational level; being engaged; being unemployed and having family risk factors. Non-violent methods prevailed over violent ones both in attempted and committed suicides.
