Abstract

The AIDS epidemic has evoked strong ethical doubts, among them physician-assisted suicide (PAS), which has been considered for numerous terminal diseases, including AIDS. It's already practiced in some communities in Australia, Belgium, Netherlands and the USA, in spite of its illegality, and its religious reprobation. Nevertheless, some authors consider PAS as an ethical approach in some cases, and a theoretical and rationalized structured for its development has been established. Notwithstanding, AIDS and PAS are still controversial issues, and further studies are needed to analyse the reasons for and against it, to be able to establish successful palliative measures to avoid suffering. It is important create organizations that regulate and simply the PAS decision in AIDS as well as in other terminal illnesses.
