Abstract

This a is a brief report on the III World Congress of Bioethics (San Francisco, November 1996), which gave an overview of current issues in the field ; e.g. the study of the human genome, the protection of research subjects 50 years after Nuremberg, physician assisted suicide. The presentation by Dr J. Mann is discussed, who underlined how the respect of human rights is a requirement to effectively deal with problems such as AIDS One may say that human rights are to public health what classical medical ethics is to the individual doctor-patient relationship. Working for change in the life environment, in the sense of social and economic justice, is an integral part of public health action.
