Abstract

The authors summarize their experience with 107 intoxicated patients comprising 54 men and 53 women. Sixty-six intoxications were attempted suicide, another 23 were accidental, in 8 instances toxicomania was involved and in 10 instances chronic ethylism. From the total number 41 patients suffered from serious psychiatric affections of the type of psychosis, but only 12 patients had a psychiatric disease in the case history. In 23 instances suicide was a demonstrative action or hysterical reaction to disputes with partners. In the latter group women predominate over men. The group comprises 8 drug addicts, 5 being dependent on hard drugs. The most frequent cause of intoxication which was used separately or in combination with others was ethyl alcohol ingested by 34 patients. The other most frequently used intoxicating substance is flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), which was taken by 33 subjects. In 55 patients medium severe intoxications were involved, 25 intoxications were mild and 17 severe.
