Abstract

The present study considers variability in suicidal outcomes (attempted and completed suicide) over small areas in London. These small areas, electoral wards, average just under 10 thousand in population. A Bayesian framework allowing for prior uncertainty in structured and unstructured variability (respectively spatially correlated errors and pure heterogeneity) is adopted. Covariates representing the summary effects of deprivation and anomie (social disorganization) are included in the analysis, and their contextual variability modelled in the same way as variability in the level of suicidal outcomes.
