Abstract

Death in police custody always create whimsical condition weather it may be due to natural or unnatural hence it is the State's twin liability to make sure the right to life in custodial surroundings, and also State responsibility in cases of custodial death. Lack of healthy custodial environment, basic healthcare need and physical or mental torture by law enforcement agency and prisoner inmates are widespread assertion made by prisoner's relatives. In this retrospective study conducted at Forensic Medicine Department, B.J Medical College Ahmedabad between time period of January.2015 to July, 2017, we have analysed the trends and pattern of custodial death brought mortuary at the civil hospital Ahmedabad. Most oj the cases were preventable both communicable and non-communicable diseases which are related to life style and prisoner's food habits, and hygiene, lack of basic medical care. In the present study 89.20% were male while females where only 10.71%. In 84% cases of death were due to natural cause, 12% of cases were of suicidal, 1.78% cases were of accidental and in 1.78% cases cause of death were undermined. Of total study population 89% were Hindu, 11% were Muslim, 50% were Under Trail 39.28% were convicted prisoner and 10.71% were died while they were on parole. © 2017, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
