Abstract

Compared to its proportion of the total population the age group of older people (65+ years) is overrepresented in suicide statistics in Germany and many other countries. Risk factors are social stressors, impaired physical and psychological well-being and functioning as well as maladaptive coping. Suicide ideation is an indicator for suicidal tendencies. Primary health care providers are important for identifying older adults at risk. Effective therapeutic treatments exist but are rarely taken into consideration by older age groups.
