Abstract

Introduction. A kind of suicide only partially refl ects the mechanism of suicidogenesis, while its motive is the key and versatile factor. Motive is the final result of factors and prerequisites of suicidal behavior, while the type of suicidal behavior is a step in its implementation or the matter of patient's preference.

OBJECTIVE. To study of motivational characteristics of suicide attempts of patients, who receive treatment in the LOPB between 2006-2013, for further assessment of prediction of the eff ects of suicidal activity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. There were selected and analyzed 409 cases of suicidal and autoagressive behavior of 15 thousand medical records of patients treated in the period 2006-2013 in the inpatient departments of Lisichansk regional psychiatric hospital.

RESULTS. The analysis of motives of suicidal behavior revealed significant gender diff erences in the forms of suicidal behavior, nosological and age composition of the study group.

CONCLUSIONS. The most frequent motive of suicidal behavior among men is the avoidance of unbearable situations (32.4%), while among women - the avoidance of pain (34.4%). The motive of avoiding unfavorable situations is often a trigger of suicidal behavior for 30-39 year-old men (52.3%±0.71) with personality disorder (42.8%±0.65); 39.3%±0.62 of cases lead to parasuicidal attempts. Among women, this is the main motive in young age - 20-29 (38.8%±0.6) in case of alcohol addiction (33.3%±0.56); 55.5±0.72% of cases lead to parasuicidal attempts. The motive of avoidance of suff ering in men is evenly distributed in the age from 20 to 69 years, which is manifested in true suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts (27.5%±0.51), and it prevails in case of aff ective pathology (37.5%±0.6). This motive dominates in case of aff ective disorders (47.1%±0.68) both in women and men, with the peak at the age of 50-59 years (43.3%±0.65), and it is more often manifested in suicidal intentions (39.6%±0.62). There was revealed a considerable similarity of characteristics of patients, including gender, in such motives of suicide as a protest and appeal. This is mostly mentally healthy patients of both sexes, at the age of 20-39 years (in case of protest - up to 29 years, in case of appeal - up to 39 years) with the attempts of parasuicide. The motive of self-punishment dominated among both men and women with the diagnosis of schizophrenia (42.8%±0.64 and 65.3%±0.79 respectively), with a peak at the age of 50-59 years (28.5%±0.52 and 30.7%±0.54), but true suicide attempts dominated among men (50%±0.69) and suicidal intentions - among women (50%±0.69). © 2017 Psychiatry psychotherapy and clinical psychology.
