Abstract

This comment shows that the common statement of the German bishops' conference and of the VELKD on "God and human dignity" is to be understood as necessary witness to a consensus in which the confessions find a common basis. The comment unfolds it as a "differentiated consensus" based on a biblical consensus even when ethical issues are concerned. As far as research into embryotic stem cells and assisted suicide are concerned, a confined dissent is noticed. It is then discussed to what extent this dissent is to be understood as a confined one or as a significant disagreement even with regard to fundamental distinctions as for example "human life" and "beginning of being human". The comment appreciates further discussion and testing of the presented approaches for all confessions maintaining a differentiated consensus. © 2017 Aschendorffsche Verlagsbuchhandlung.
