Abstract

Several surveys (ESCAPAD…) agree on adolescents' early, excessive and repeated alcohol consumption. ER teams are often confronted with this "binge drinking". The chosen definition of binge drinking for this research is the one from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), that is at least 4 drinks for a girl and at least 5 drinks for a boy in less than 2 hours. Our objective is to detect, among the young, high-risk behaviors related to alcohol consumption. As a first step, at Bordeaux University Hospital, we proposed a quantitative study with regards to the specifics of 11 to 20-year-old link to alcohol (mode, practice, space, timeline, company, reasons, consequences…). Were considered as high-risk behaviors similar previous hospitalizations, altercations, road traffic accidents, traumas linked to falls, physical or sexual assaults and suicide attempts. In a second phase, through a psychological interview research, we went into the theme in depth. We notice traumatic consequences linked to alcohol, especially for young men. Drunk young are exposed to risks with short-term consequences (traumatology, fights, suicide attempts…) and to medium- and long-term ones (alcohol dependence, academic difficulties, family problems…), in their private or public space. On the other hand, massive alcoholization proves to be a puberty act, looking for limits, whether it be in the relation to the body or to the others, to parents and to society. It can also be linked to individual suffering (violence, separation…). Those young need a particular orientation when they come to the ER. © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS
